A watch tells time, but the watch you choose also says something about where you are going, what you are wearing, and whether you gave any thought to how the whole thing works together.
Before we go any further, I want to make one thing clear. I do not think you need an expensive watch.
In How Many Watches Do You Really Need? and Expensive Watches: Are They Worth It?, I show you ways to build more versatility without spending a lot of money. That matters here because different occasions may call for different watches.
Start With Two
If you can afford only two watches, my best advice is simple. Buy one all gold-tone watch and one all silver-tone watch.
Keep both simple. At most, let them tell you the day number. You do not need ten dials, three knobs to tune the thing in, a rotating bezel, or enough information on your wrist to track a lunar landing.
A minimalist watch can move between many different occasions. A big old honking watch with ten dials and three knobs has a much narrower life. Save that one for sporting events, rugged settings, and highly casual situations.
You cannot go wrong with a watch that simply tells you what time it is. That was its original purpose.
Wear the gold-tone watch with warmer colors such as khaki, beige, tan, brown, burgundy, and rust. Wear the silver-tone watch with cooler colors such as green, blue, gray, and white. Either can work beautifully with black or dark navy.
If you own only two watches, there will occasionally be times when neither one feels quite right. Maybe the watch is too casual for the occasion. Maybe the metal fights with what you are wearing. Maybe the size or style simply looks wrong.
If you are unsure which watch to wear, my best advice is simple.
Use the clock on your phone and leave the watch at home.
Wearing no watch is better than wearing the wrong watch simply because you think your wrist has to have something on it.
Looking right boosts self-confidence, and there is nothing more attractive than a confident man.
The Watches I Chose For These Occasions
In this section, I am going to show you a variety of watches for different occasions. I want to make one thing clear before we start. These are not random inexpensive watches I found and dropped into the guide because I liked the way they looked.
I selected each watch specifically for the occasion where you will see it. I considered the size and shape of the case, the color and complexity of the face, the band, the overall level of formality, and how easily the watch could work with clothing a man might reasonably wear to that occasion.
For each occasion, I will show you three different choices. There is rarely only one right answer. One man may prefer gold, another silver, another leather. The goal is not to make you buy the exact watch I chose. The goal is to show you what works and help you recognize similar qualities when choosing your own.
Every watch you will see is available on Amazon for under $25, with some as inexpensive as $9.99.
The low price is not why I chose them.
I chose them because I believe they are right for the occasion.
Business And Funerals
Business and funerals are different situations, but they have one important thing in common. The watch should not be the loudest thing in the room.
◄ View ►
For business, you can allow a little more personality if the rest of your clothing supports it. For a funeral, go quieter. A funeral is not the place to test-drive the watch that looks like it came with an instruction manual and a backup generator.
The safest choices are simple, slim, and easy under a shirt cuff. Look for clean faces, restrained markers, and metal or leather that works with your clothing. Gold-tone can work beautifully with navy, very dark charcoal, brown, tan, or warmer business clothing. Silver-tone is strong with gray, navy, white, and cooler combinations.
If you are going to a funeral and you are not sure which watch to wear, choose the quietest one. If even that feels wrong, wear no watch.
Nobody at a funeral should remember your watch.
Dating And Weddings

Dating and weddings allow more personality. You still want the watch to support the outfit, but this is where a slightly more interesting case, face, or band can help.
A date is often about looking intentional without looking like you tried for three hours. A wedding is dressier, but it is still not your personal coronation unless you are the groom.
This is where a rectangular gold watch, a refined mesh band, or a handsome leather strap can shine. The watch can be a little more memorable because the setting allows it.
Just do not let it compete with the rest of you. The watch should help someone notice the complete man, not distract from him.
Casual Days And Festive Social Gatherings
Casual does not mean careless. It means you have more room to relax.

A casual watch can have a little more size, texture, color, or personality. Leather straps work especially well here, whether in brown, black, or other understated colors. Darker dials, black cases, and more relaxed designs are also perfectly at home outside the boardroom.
This is also where your clothing matters most. If you are wearing brown leather shoes or a brown belt, a brown strap can pull the look together. If you are wearing black, a black watch with gold or silver details can look sharp. If the outfit is simple, the watch can add a little interest without taking over.
Casual settings are where many men get sloppy. Do not be one of them.
Sporting Events And Rugged Settings

Finally, the big old honking watch has somewhere to go.
A larger watch with more visual weight can work at sporting events, outdoor gatherings, rugged casual settings, and times when your clothing is more relaxed. This is where a heavier case, extra dials, or chronograph styling makes more sense.
That does not mean you should wear a giant watch just because you can. Proportion still matters. If the watch looks like it could pull your wrist out of alignment, perhaps rethink the decision.
But this is the category where a bolder watch has the best chance of looking intentional rather than ridiculous.
Dressy Evenings And Special Events

Dressy evenings and special events call for a watch that looks refined, not desperate for attention.
This is where restraint usually wins. A black face with gold markers can look fantastic with black clothing and gold jewelry. A silver-tone minimalist watch can work beautifully with gray, white, navy, or cooler combinations. A slim gold watch can look exceptional with warmer evening clothing.
The watch should feel like part of the whole presentation. Shirt, pants, shoes, belt, jewelry, grooming, fragrance, confidence. All of it matters.
A watch can help complete the picture, but it should never become the picture.
See It All The Way Through
Choosing the right watch for the occasion is only part of the picture. Rings, bracelets, chains, earrings, cuff links, and other jewelry can either support that watch or turn the whole thing into a mess.
Once you start thinking about watches this way, you should also think about everything else you wear with them. A great watch can still look wrong if the rest of your jewelry is fighting for attention.
